NEWS ➤ Peugeot’s striking 508 SW for 2019

07 Jun

With its sights set firmly on rivals such as the Skoda Superb Estate and Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer, the all-new Peugeot 508 SW follows in the footsteps of the recently unveiled 508 sedan.

This second-generation 508 SW is due to be revealed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October and become available in the UK from January 2019. The new 508 SW is built on PSA’s versatile EMP2 platform which allows it to shed around 70kg of weight over the outgoing iteration.

Only slightly lower and longer than the saloon, the estate brings boot space of 530 litres with the rear seats and luggage cover in place, rising to 1,780 litres in total. It also features a hands-free powered tailgate and Peugeot’s ‘Magic Flat’ function, allowing the driver to fold back the two sides of the rear bench seat.

Reinforcing the French firm’s premium approach to the new 508 SW, the car receives the latest version of its highly acclaimed i-Cockpit digital dashboard, ergonomic wrap-around seats with five multi-point massage programmes and the option of a top-of-the-range audio system designed by FOCAL.

New safety features for the range include adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, lane keeping assist and a night vision system that can detect humans or animal in front of the vehicle in low-visibility conditions – said to be a first for the D-segment.

The engine line-up brings PureTech and BlueHDi petrol and diesel engines along with a plug-in hybrid petrol due in the second half of 2019. This uses batteries located under the rear seats to retain boot space and offers an electric-only range of 31 miles.

Petrol engines comprise of a four-cylinder 1.6-litre unit offered in two states of tune: 178hp or 222hp. Both feature the new EAT8 eight-speed auto gearbox and are equipped with a ‘freewheeling’ function in Eco mode that reduces fuel consumption by around three per cent.

Diesels comprise a 128hp 1.5-litre unit with either the eight-speed auto or six-speed manual, along with a 158hp and 178hp 2.0-litre with the auto only.

Petrol engines are certified to Euro6d-TEMP and diesel engines are certified to Euro6d-TEMP-EVAP.
