The MG3 – MG UK’s best-selling model – has received a substantial facelift for its 2018 model year with a completely new look inside and out. Priced from £9,495, dealer models will be in the showrooms from next month when order books open.
Replacing the fist-generation MG3, which sold a reasonable 10,000 units in its four years on sale, the new Chinese supermini is an evolution rather than a revolution and brings with it MG’s new exterior design cues first seen with the MG ZS compact SUV last year.
On the outside, the car has undergone an extensive update, including a new face of MG, featuring the ‘star-rider’ grille which frames the brand’s octagonal logo. It’s flanked by brand new LED headlights and there’s also a new front bumper complete with angular and sporty vents.
Elsewhere around the car, new side skirts appear and there’s a fresh rear bumper too. A new 16-inch alloy wheel is offered, while plenty in the way of customisation options exist – six paint colours, colour contrasting wing mirrors, plus roof and bodywork graphic packs are available.
On the inside, the 2018 MG3’s cabin is all new and now has one of the roomiest cabins in the supermini segment, with head and leg room for five adults to ride in some degree of comfort. The boot space at 285 litres is reasonable for the class.
Up front, the cabin centres around the new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, equipped as standard on mid-range Excite and Exclusive models.
Engine and transmission
Disappointingly, the new MG3 is still powered by its ageing and rather lacklustre 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which develops 105bhp and 137Nm of torque which has been tweaked to meet Euro 6D emission regulations.
Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, with 0-60mph coming up in a claimed 10.4 seconds and a top speed of 108mph. MG claims 47.1mpg and 140g/km CO2.
Trim grades and equipment
At launch, there will be three different versions offered in the new MG3 line-up; the range-entry ‘Explore’, mid-grade ‘Excite’ and the ‘Exclusive’.
Standard across the range is Bluetooth, while ‘Excite’ and ‘Exclusive’ trim grades offer an 8-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, DAB radio and steering wheel audio controls. The ‘Exclusive’ version adds a reversing camera with guidelines.
Pricing and warranty
Starting from just £9,495 for the entry level ‘Explore’, the mid-range ‘Excite’ comes in at £11,395 with the ‘Exclusive’ costing £12,795. New MG3 is also available on a 5-year, 0% APR finance package with no deposit required from the customer.
As with all current MG models the MG3 comes with a transferable seven-year warranty.
