A top three finalist in the World Urban Car awards when launched in 2017, the Suzuki Ignis has received an exterior and interior refresh and introduces a new hybrid powertrain.

Retaining features such as the slit-like C-pillar, blacked out A- and B- pillars (to give a floating roof effect), bumper garnish and clamshell bonnet, the updated Ignis adds a new five-spoke front grille along with front and rear bumpers featuring trapezoid shape silver skid plates.

There are now a total of seven exterior paint colours (seven single- and six dual-tone) and includes three new shades of Caravan Ivory Pearl Metallic, Rush Yellow Metallic and Tough Khaki Pearl Metallic.

Interior

The inside gets a new instrument panel and additional interior accent colours of Lazuli Medium Blue Pearl and Medium Grey Metallic.

Trim grades

Three trim grades are available on the refreshed Ignis range – SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5. Standard kit for the SZ3 includes six airbags, air conditioning, DAB radio with Bluetooth, 15-inch wheels, LED headlights, body coloured door mirrors, front electric windows, rear privacy glass and five seat capacity.

SZ-T adds rear view camera, larger 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, wheel arch extensions and four seat capacity with individually sliding rear seats and Smartphone Link Display Audio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The top end SZ5 gets auto air conditioning, satellite navigation, dual camera brake support, lane departure warning, weave alert, keyless entry and start, rear electric windows and front fog lamps.

Engines and transmissions

Suzuki first introduced its 1.2-litre Dualjet technology (K12C) initially in the Swift in 2014 and then in the Baleno and Ignis models. The K12C has been replaced by a new K12D Dualjet unit offering greater fuel economy and even lower CO2 emissions.

The K12D 1.2-litre engine powering the new Ignis features a new dual injection system and offers 82 hp and 107Nm of torque from just 2,800 rpm.

Enhanced hybrid system

Energy efficiency is further improved when combined with the light hybrid system powered by a lithium-ion battery whose capacity has been extended from 3 Ah to 10 Ah.

The mild hybrid system converts the kinetic energy generated during deceleration into electrical energy which is charged to the lithium-ion battery and used by an electric motor function to assist the motor during acceleration for better energy efficiency.

Available as standard equipment for all Ignis models, the upgraded 12V Hybrid system is a compact and lightweight unit that incorporates an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) which acts as both a generator and starter motor, the ISG is belt driven and assists the engine during vehicle take off and acceleration and also generates electricity through regenerative braking.  The ISG unit has a power output of 2.3kW with a torque figure of 50Nm and the components of the system add just 6.2kg to the overall weight of the car.

For the Ignis with 2WD manual transmission the Hybrid system helps Suzuki reach a WLTP-regulated CO2 emissions figure of just 114g/km, plus achieve a WLTP combined fuel consumption figure of 55.7 mpg.

CVT Gearbox

Suzuki’s CVT powertrain is available as an option on the facelifted Ignis SZ-T and SZ5 models with 2WD. The CVT system can vary the actual gear ratio continuously and stepless from low-speed to high-speed range depending on the driving conditions. The CVT allows improved driveability with reduced shift-shock in comparison with a conventional automatic transmission.

4WD (AllGrip)

The Ignis adopts Suzuki’s AllGrip four-wheel drive system which is available optionally on the SZ5 model with manual transmission. First introduced in Swift, this is a well proven and simple fully automatic and permanent four-wheel drive layout which transfers additional torque to the rear wheels when required via a viscous coupling.

It is an ideal choice for customers living in rural areas who may need additional mobility across rougher terrain or for crossing slippery surfaces during winter months without owning a more conventional SUV-sized vehicle.

The Ignis AllGrip system includes hill descent control and grip control which activates on slippery surfaces at speeds under 18 mph. Once activated by the driver, it focuses torque on the driven wheels that have grip and will quickly apply braking to the wheel that is spinning. Also activated by the driver, hill descent control will manage the goings on underneath at under 15mph in first or second gear.

Ignis AllGrip models have impressive fuel economy of 51.9 mpg and low CO2 emissions of just 123 g/km (both WLTP combined).
