Toyota has revealed the all-new Yaris Cross, a compact, authentic SUV that goes on sale in the UK and Europe in 2021.

The Toyota Yaris Cross has been designed and developed for Europe and offers a raised ride height, higher driving position and the option of Toyota’s AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive system.

It is built on Toyota’s new GA-B compact car platform, which is also being used for the new Yaris hatchback, due for launch in the UK this summer. The platform affords the Yaris Cross a high level of body rigidity and a well-balanced chassis, making the car responsive and agile to drive.

The car takes design cues from the latest iteration of Toyota’s RAV4. The front of the car features a flat-front design with swept-back headlights and two large air intakes. The sides of the car feature black plastic body cladding and squared-off wheel arches. At the back, the rear end features a sharply angled C-pillar, with wrap around tail lights that merge across the rear hatch.

The new compact SUV has the same 2,560mm wheelbase as the Yaris hatchback, but is 240mm longer overall, securing more interior space. The ground clearance is 30mm higher and the vehicle is taller and wider overall.

At launch, the Yaris Cross will only be available as a hybrid, with a three-pot 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor setup producing 114hp. Both front- and four-wheel-drive versions will be available, with Toyota claiming the front-wheel-drive model emits under 120g/km, with the four-wheel-drive version emitting under 135g/km of CO2. All hybrid models will be available with a CVT gearbox.

AWD-i all-wheel drive system provides extra stability and traction in everyday driving, in poor conditions and on low-grip surfaces. An electric system, it is more compact and weighs less than mechanical AWD units, helping the Yaris Cross Hybrid achieve better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than any of its all-wheel drive B-SUV competitors.
